Retro in photography.

Technologie

The tendency in the digital world of photography is a great technologic achievement, there are possible more (“ clicks” ) images made last year than the total previous period of photography.
The megapixel hype stays on to create more pixels and other technical features in camera’s and lenses.
Cameras becoming more complex and expensive, photo’s don’t get better with it, the quality of a photo does’t depend directly on the camera but depends more what the photographer sees and composes.

“Seeing is not enough; you have to feel what you photograph” – Andre Kertesz

Time travel

During this “ digital hype “ there is also a movement that goes more or less back in time, analogue photography is hot. New films are manufactured and see the day light again,
brands as Ilford, Kodak, Bergger, Adox, Ferrania, Fomapan, Rollei and Agfa etc, fabrics are restarted and production is in ramped up.
Manufactures even invest and develop new chemicals (developers) for black and white film. Film (black & White) can also be developed in instant coffee with vitamin C and washing soda and tap water. Caffenol, the environmental alternative.

Internet

New technology has also positive effect, you can find any thing about analogue photography on the internet, recipes for film and developers, description, video's to much to tell.

Retro

Why are these retro movements such as analogue music, analogue photography are making a coming back is an interesting question.
Retro, is it a hang to previous stable times in a less complex time reflected in falling back to old designs and technologies, also of influence is to point out the non mainstream sensibility of certain group of people.
Retro is more like go back to the period of the 70’s till 90’s and the term vintage is before the 60’s.
Old technics like wet plate collodion and tin type processes are trendy.
Remarkable is that a lot of the people who give these old technics a warm hart are young, the lomography market and instant film like the impossible project are loved by the young ones.
I don’t know exactly were the boundary of the age lies but a lot between 20 and 30 as found on several sites on the internet.

Why film

- The analogue camera’s are less expensive
- They have a proven reliability even if they are 20 or 30 years old.
- To be in control over the whole process
- The quality and in special the colors range are not met with digital technique they are different.
- If you take an image you can’t see the result directly, the process is slowing down., a great element of surprise.
- Photographers working with film work more selective than digital and can enjoy several moments; take the picture, develop the film is the 1 st view to the result and than the printing
- The sharpness differs from digital
- Film is more forgiving in relation to incorrect exposure.
- Preserving the craftsmanship of analogue photography for future generations.
- Lifetime of negatives and prints is long.
- huge dynamic range
- Unlimited gray tone and colors

Rainy Sunday

Who doesn’t know the old photo albums opened on a rainy Sunday to look back to old great moments of the family, all perfect memories shot with film.
What will happen with al the digital files in the cloud, where are they in 30 or fourth years, i don’t know but i think a lot of these images are gone , deleted and vaporized in the cloud.
Are we guilty of getting a little bit snap illness with our cameras, taking a load of photos sometime nothing in particular just because we can and we do, there is room enough on the memory card.
